The Future Laboratory is looking for a talented, organised Lead Designer/Art Director to join its existing highly creative team. The ideal candidate will have a strong editorial/publishing background, perhaps gained in a large magazine/publishing company. You will be looking to further your career in a smaller, fast-paced environment, where you will have (and will relish) overall responsibility for the quality of all designed products. This is not a nine-to-five job or environment and will require high levels of energy, tenacity and enthusiasm. Key to success in the role is the ability and willingness to manage the design team, schedules and delivery of all products, as well as being able to create and deliver inspirational material. This is not a role for someone who simply wishes to be a graphic designer.

Requirements
• Solid experience of designing in a design for print environment.
• Experience or knowledge of print and production processes/workflows in a publishing environment, from concept stage through to print production.
• Experienced and skilled at managing and working on multiple projects at the same time.
• Experience and skill at working to incredibly tight deadlines.
• A strong creative eye and appreciation of visual language.
• Ability to manage workloads of yourself and others, frequently prioritising and juggling deadlines.
• Experience of (or willingness to take on) management and leadership of junior designers and freelancers, and ability to develop a team.
• Experience of working with a range of suppliers: illustrators, photographers, visualising companies, printers etc.
• Willingness to and experience of working as part of a team.
• A full contacts book (freelance contacts, illustrators, photographers, suppliers, printers etc) is desirable.


Summary of responsibilities:
• Managing the implementation of our new brand identity, ensuring this is applied across the business.
• Responsible for design of TFL material on editorial output (own publications), all related marketing material and all client work
• Management of design/production schedules, working closely with the Studio Manager.
• Line manager for a junior designer, so responsible for all training, development and performance management.
• Responsible for recruitment, interviewing and management of future hires, as required.
• Responsible for the booking and management of freelance staff, as required.
• Build a network and working relationships with design/creative suppliers, such as printers, visualising companies, illustrators etc
• Responsible for effective management of creative/print/production supplies and budgets


Client work
• Client reports: in-depth research projects, often highly visual, answering client brief into consumer typologies, trends, consumer mindsets, global trends, across all industry sectors: fashion, retail, automotive, banking, software, web etc
• Client proposals
• Client and conference slide presentations: 40-60 minute slide presentations on specific themes, from luxury travel to mobile phone use in Russia.
• Futures Reports: 3 per year, 180 page full colour doc (150 copies) sold in conjunction with a 50 person event, each on a particular theme, e.g. luxury, technology, food etc. Each has an A3 folded image-based dust cover that needs art directing.
• Trend Briefing Dossier: our six monthly 174 page full colour doc (300 copies) on a selection of key trends, sold in conjunction with the Trend Briefing, our biannual full day conference for 250 attendees.
• Trend Briefing slide presentations: the slide show for the above, approx 800 slides.

Our publication: THE:
• Our free quarterly magazine sent globally to over 10,000 of our contacts, both editorial and commercial. It is also available in selected venues. The magazine's design is handled off-site.

Our publication: Viewpoint
• The bi-annual trends and design magazine we produce under contract. Designed and commissioned to the highest standards of editorial and visual content. Designed to an existing template in-house.
